Are you sure that there is anything wrong with this? I have a 71 250 C and a 67 250 SL. Both with 4 speed automatics, but different automatics. The documentation on the 67 says that the car will always start in 2nd unless you override with the gear selector or floor it on start up. The behavior of the 71 seems to go almost instantly from 1st to 2nd (which seems like a logical variation from the 67 transmission) and take a more normal time from 2nd to 3rd. I would think that under hard accelleration staying in 2nd a long time would be the correct behavior.
Having said that, have you changed the fluid/filter in your transmission?
