lowering your w108 options

I see h&r made a cup kit that has lowered the front approximately 2.25 inches and 1.5 rear (part number 40020-2 for v8 cars ).

Problem is, this kit is no longer available in the usa. Importing it to the usa would kill me price wise. As the dollar to euro, plus the normal markup would make it cost prohibitive. I would be better off running bilstein hd's with a custom spring.

that leads me to my question-- aside from h&r, has anyone else made springs or had custom springs made for the 108? I would surely think that somewhere in the cars 40+ years of existence i am not the only one who has wanted to do this.

thanks for the help

lowering springs

Check out

Sport Springs for Mercedes-Benz SL and Sedans

He is a very knowledgeable with regards to suspension and the W108 in general.
However his springs which he has made special will run you $700!

Thanks for the info. be honest, their prices are right in accordance with what i figured for custom springs. they are actually a little cheaper than most custom spring places i contacted who dealt w/ older domestic vehicles.

To put it in perspective, the h&r cup kit for 4 shocks and 4 springs after i were to ship it would be around 2k.

i know i can get 4 bilstein hd's for reasonably cheap at shop cost. couple this w/ the custom springs and i think i could be into a setup for around a grand.

That to me is pretty reasonable all things considered to me.

thanks for the info.

no, i just dont care for the 4x4 look. I'm in my 20's, but im not an mtv person I own 5 german cars, one of each from the german 5. I work as an auto tech. When i'm not at work i'm at home working on cars. I cant leave anything alone.

The Mercedes is my cruiser. I can comfortably fit me and 4 of my friends and a trunk load of stuff and away we go. i actually drive the car every day in the summer months rain or shine and store it in the winter. The car is a driver. I get more compliments and remarks in this car than any other car i own or have driven.

Actually though, i have thought about building a german street rod. If i were to build or "pimp my ride" a mercedes, the gear head in me would turbo the 4.5 engine. Yet the engine would be dropped into an old 170 chassis. the other scenerio i run through my head is a 30's open fender ford powered by an m100 6.3 w/ a chevy auto trans and piss off all the traditional flat head ford rodders as well as mercedes 6.3 owners. so any leads on a reasonably cheap 170 are appreciated.

So in short, no i'm not going to "pimp my ride". I keep rocking the 14 inch steelies/hubcaps and 215/70/14 not-wide-enough-for-me white wall tires. I truly love the lines of the old benzs. They just have a regal bearing coupled w/ great build quality. Yet if i had some epiphany on how to improve the car, i wouldn't think twice to chop it up. Thankfully for now im happy with it. I dont need another project.

IMHO, a 1.5" drop would be enough. Anything more than that would surely "pimp your ride"...
