Another Junkyard Observation - Sept 2009

I've been to 12 Pick-Part type salvage yards in the past two seeks in Southern, Central, and Northern California. I have observations for those of you who care about parts for older and newer Mercedes cars.

1. Pickings are horrible now and for the next two months due to the cash for clunkers program. All of the junkyards are backlogged with 1982 and newer cars so that means little to no room for older cars. If you are looking for old car parts, give it a few months.

2. Pickings are FANTASTIC if you are looking for 126 parts or anything newer. There are lots and lots and lots of nice S-class (and other) cars at the junkyard that got turned in as part of the clunkers program. (You will REALLY be happy if you need parts for a 1984+ Jaguar XJ6 because they are practically stacked all over the place).

3. Oakland sucks for parts. Overpriced and no selection.

4. Modesto has nothing.

Currently: 1967 250 SL, 1963 220Sb, 1965 300SE Lang, 1971 280SE parts car, 1972 Alfa GTV, 1965 Alfa Duetto, 1993 BMW R100R
Past: 1971 250 C, 1985 300 TD, 1967 250 S, 1968 280 S,1981 300 D, 1982 280CE, 3 Facel Vegas, Borgward Isabella Coupe, Alfa 2600 Sprint, Volvo P1900 (yes), numerous less interesting Volvos, ...

What is incredibly ignorant about this cash for clunkers program written by people who do not appreciate older cars is the stipulation that the dealer must drain the engine oil and run the engine with sodium silicate in the crankcase, until it locks up, ruining all moving parts and rendering the engines useless.

What a shame.

The pricing trend is going up for engine parts for these cars like the w123 / 124 / 126 and others.

The Pull-a-Part chain has seen lots of W126 sedans and many of them are EURO models. I was able to find some rare items last week. You are right about the scarcity of inventory. Scrap prices were down too. Prices are back up now so I'm looking for more inventory going into fall. There were a bunch of old FORD, GM, and Dodge trucks from the 50's in there last week. Most were rust buckets, but interesting anyway. Also a 1961 VW bus!

I went out again this weekend. Basically saw rows and rows of "clunkers" with their engines spraypainted blue or orange (indicating "don't buy this engine - we won't sell it"). I found 3 114's and 1 108 and got a few good parts (front fog lights for a 114 and ?). I figure about 2 months from now the more typical inventory will start to reappear and the 1984+ clunker stuff will go away...
