1972 280se 4.5 A/C compressor

I just had my mechanic empty and charge the AC system. I just bought this car and the previous owner said the AC was working about 2 years ago. After the charge of the system the AC is blowing nice and cold however there is a constant knocking sound like a woodpecker from the compressor when it cycles on. Anyone know what this means? I would say replace the compressor but if it's blowing cold right now could it just be an adjustment or lubrication or something?

Thanks for the help.

Your car has the same compressor as in my 280 SEL 4.5L which is a Frigidaire "cylindrical" compressor that was used heavily on Cadillacs, buicks and oldsmobiles. It is an excellent compressor that you can buy cheap. Yours is knocking because the pistons articulating plate inside it is worn out. It will knock for a long time and then it will fail. I will be concerned about the bits of metal that will end up clogging your system. Personally, I would get it replaced by a GM rebuilt unit.

I have little experience with Mercedes, but I know the old York piston compressors are getting difficult to find parts for. I'm planning to swap in a Sanden when I get to that part of my 250c restoration. They are quieter, lighter and have plenty of capacity. -G.

You'll need to get the brand name off your compressor.
