question

I have a 1977 280 CE, and I removed the gas tank to have it cleaned. I was wondering if anyone knows what the thing that is above the gas tank is for? It looks like a black egg carton and has a tube running to it from somewhere in the firewall. I figure it is some kind of safety device but that could be way offbase.
Another question is what are the three canisters for that have fuel running to them underneath the gas tank? None of my books answer either of these questions.

The "egg crate" is a vacuum tank. It holds vacuum for the door locks when the car is not running.

I'm not completely positive on the canisters due to some model variances but you should have; A. fuel pump (or even two fuel pumps), B. the fuel filter and C. the fuel accumulator.

Fuel tank outlet hose goes to the pump which is connected to the filter which feeds the accumulator which also back feeds the pump to smooth any surges in line pressure.

Chuck, you are a Godsend. I expect I'm showing my ignorance, but I spent untold hours trying to download a version of EPCnet from a site in Britain--that I paid (not much). I just did the download from your link in two minutes, and now I can dissect my R129 and my W220 anytime I want. What a great (free) site! Everybody on this site ought to have this downloaded.

How long has it been available?
