Talking 1971 MB 250CE Air conditioner controls

So, my step son just got this car (he lives out of state) and asks me, a MB owner, how to turn on the A/C. He sends me a pic. The car is immaculate inside and out!! Wow! 1971 250 CE.

Slide heat and cool marked controls to the left and right and a silver knob in the middle. I assume either you turn it right and or left or possibly push the knob/button. He says none of that causes a response from the system. He says he had the knob replaced but it just spins around in circles like it did before he had it replaced.

He's not car savvy yet but he will be by the time he gets done with this one!

Any clue how to really turn the A/C on?? Or is something broken, missing or needs repair..again?

If it's like my 73 280C, the knob in the center (between the heater controls) is the blower switch. There should be another rotary knob with an arrow on it below and to the left (next to the cigarette lighter). That is the air conditioning on/off, thermostat switch. All the way counter clockwise is off, all the way clockwise is full on. There should also be labeling on the panel around that switch that shows direction for "colder" setting. If the blower knob is just spinning freely, it is defective or the switch is bad. The knob and shaft that engages the blower switch just pulls out. If the switch is bad, you'll have to change the whole heater control unit/switch which is a semi pain in the a??. I just did this on mine because the high position on the fan didn't work sometimes. Bad contacts on the switch. By the way, both switches have to be on for it to work. The A/C thermostat switch knob is screwed on, and will only spin if the threads on the knob or switch are stripped.
