Post Power steering on W115..re-inforcement.

Hi.
I'm currently restoring a 1973 W115 200 /8 .

And, I will rebuild the car, so it gets power steering.

But, I've heard that many of these old /8 models actually have weak spots in the front. So there might occur cracks or breakage at the powersteering-box.

I also heard that someone ?? Mercedes-Benz or a Mercedes garage, at some time made a re-inforcement to the front of the car. Some BOLT-ON kit, so the "frame" would better tolerate the power og the powersteering.

I've contacted Mercedes-Benz dealer and asked, and got no answer.

My car is allready old, and I would guess that the front end allready is weakened a bit by age and a little rust here en there.. So, I really would like to know more about this re-inforcement..

Anyone here know any more details round this ?

These cars are all but tanks, and Mercedes put a lot of thought into designing them to last. Unless the front of the car is held together by rust and paint, or it's been in a major front end accident and not repaired properly, you'll be good.

Thank's ..
I'll be driving really nice and steady.. So I don't think the driving will kill it..
But, my car was in a front collision in 96-97, and I can see some small signe of the collision on the front left "frame" part.. No cracks, but there's a small dent in it..
The car was straightened, and was driven until 2007, with full MOT..

Also, I heard that it usually was the taxi's that had the add-on re-inforcement. More driving= more load ..

Not true. W108 are known for their steering bolt attachment that goes to the frame breaking loose. I 'm not aware of a kit for this repair. I instead shaped, drilled, and welded a piece of steel plate to the outside of the frame. Painted it with underbody paint, used a longer hardened bolt, and its been fine ever since. That's about 22 years ago and it's going stong with no problem in that area
