Compatible engine for 1969 220?

Does anyone know of some engines that will be compatible my 69' 220?
the engine(s) can be other merc engines, or any other brand.

Thinking of a future upgrade, and it'd be nice to get something a bit more powerful in.
Thanks

Do you have a W115 then ?

If so, then the M110 280 twincam-engine is the best option for upgrade.. That was the biggest engine delivered for that car..(The W114 really, but the only difference between W114 and W115 are 6 and 4 cylinders... Pluss som drivetrain, supension and brake-parts of course)

1991 W140 400 SE - SOLD !!
1973 W115 200 -For sale as project.

It helps telling what type of car you have. That way you can get the best tips.
By, What car, I mean What chassi..
A W115 and a W114 is the same chassi, and both produced between 1967 an 1976, the difference is W114= 6 cyl, W115= 4 cyl.

Of course, your car could also be a 1969 220 S-clas..
Then the 280 twin-cam swap could be more difficult.

I am currently restoring one, and did restore one from 94 to 96 also..
So I know a little about them..
They are very prone to rust, else thay are techically/mechanicly superior to many later models. Meaning the build quality is very good.. Very few weak-spots mechanicly.
Here are some links for you:

BTW: The 220 are known as a long-stroke engine. And is very solid.

Hi Gabe69220,
The early W114 bodyshell had two diagonal stiffening braces running from the centre of the firewall to the side frames whre the engine mounts, suspension, etc is.
I have heard that the M110 twin OHC camshaft covers occupy part of the same space, ie, you can't fit the engine in without removing the braces.
If you do that, then of course, the whole front of the car will be MUCH more flexible, the steering and braking will be "loose", and other undesirable stuff.
I thjink it likely that MB used thicker steel in the later body shells into which the M110 was fitted.
An older 2.8 litre engine is the M130, which is a SOHC and does fit.
Cheers
David

ok great, thanks for that guys.
Erik, your resto project looks great, and i love the red interior.
i just changed over my tan interior to white, from my 230.4
i am going to make a photobucket account or similar, so i can link to my car.
this will help me i think, as i'm 17, and am lapping up all the tips/knowledge i can share and get my hands on.
i can see this forum becoming a really good base for understanding and learning these cars further.

i see there, no stiffening. the engine seems to fit fairly compactly.
i was look at a 280 (se?) for sale that had a BA Falcon engine in it, which actually fit perfectly..
however, i only want a merc engine in mine, so i think a M110 twin cam might be the way to go, as that shouldnt soften the steering or brakes. i just completely replaced every bit of suspension (sports) and braking .. so that might be interesing
