Question Radio for a W114 250

What size new stereo would fit in the same place the old Becker radio did in a 1971 250 sedan? Also does anyone know of a company that makes new radios that sound good and still look like the classic ones, the radio doesn't necessarily have to look an old Becker one

Thanks,
Brandon

Hi mbz,
the size of the cut out is the same as what is now known as a one unit DIN, so almost any modern radio /CD /mpeg woudl fit. the problem is the loudspeakers. the car originally had a small low powered approx 7"x3" elliptical speaker fitted behind the grille in the top of the dashboard. A few cars I have seen have cut into the back parcel shelf and fitted 9"x6" speakers there, but the sound is then behind you.
It is difficult to see where to put speakers in the front of the car without hacking it around too much, but speakers in line of sight to the listeners' ears would provide a reasonable stereo image, etc.
All in all a tricky problem. I had thought of mounting small bullet tweeters at the base of the windscreen pillars, and larger speakers in the side trim under the dash, but I want to keep my car looking as original as possible, so I haven't actually done it yet. :-)
regards
David

David, mine actually has some speakers under the dash on the panels toward the outside of the car on each side.

Also thanks tdskip for the link i would use the radio but i'm afraid it won't work ideally in a car here in the US and on top of that i don't know if i could even get one from the UK. Thanks for the link

I had a problem with the original radio and it was a fortune to get it fixed so I got a cd player from Ebay, took the glovebox out and chopped a hole in the back of it to fit the new radio in. I put a set of speakers under the dash on either side and it works a DANDY!! I have the old radio look but a digital tuner in the glovebox.

Post same problems...

i have the same problem...

i have a '72 250 and someone has put an aftermaker tape player from the 80's in it. when i bought the car it didnt work so i did some research....

somehow.... they have it wired into the original amplifier but the wire coming out the amplifier has been cut.

the whole amp was just laying in the floor when i bought it and the guy said he didnt know what it was.

there is also a wire coming from the tape player/amp area that goes underneath the drivers dash and almost out the firewall but it has been cut.

i have no idea what wires are going where and why it looks like this.

i need some real help.

also any idea on where to get a CHEAP becker europa? ebay is ridiculus

I took the plug from the back of the hazards and found which one was going to be hot with the key and wired my cd player to that ( had to use a little extra wire to get it to the back of the glovebox). I totally did without the factory radio, just unplugged it. I think thats where I had a lot of problems, that amp. I just did away with it, Its still in there and that little plug is just zip tied to something else. I will take some pics this week, I havent driven that car in a week or so, Im due for a drive...

Just find yourself a set of speakers and maybe some extra wire. Totally forget about that amp if you are putting a different radio in there. Unless there are already speakers in the vehicle you are going to need some of them as well. Find yourself a wire behind the center console that is going to be hot when the key is on, and a good ground. Wire that up and add speakers, viola!! The hole that the old radio came out of is the same size as newer radios. Its an easy install..
