w108 Door Problem

Hello. I have a '71 280SE w108. It's in pretty good condition overall, but I do have one small problem with it: the driver's door does not stay open, like the rest of the doors do. When it opens, it opens smoothly, without the catch-stop-things that keep it open at certain points. If you leave the door open, it closes itself on its own.

While this might not really seem like that much of a problem, it sort of is, because, if, for instance, you open the door, put your leg out, then reach over to the passenger's seat to grab something, the door comes back and whacks your shins! Not fun.

So, I'm wondering, before I do anything, which part's breakage would cause this? And, would it be very easy to fix, or would it be too much trouble to fix it? I apologize for my limited vocabulary; I really don't know what some of these things are called

Thanks,
Daniel

It is the door-stop. A common replacement part, and easily done. Pretty cheap as well. A very handy safety item, to be sure. A junkyard item, and about 30 minutes of work.

Okay, that's good, I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be too difficult or something. Thanks!

It's easy as eating..
-Remove the door panel.
-Loosen the locking pin on the A-pillar.
-Remove the 2 10mm bolts on the front of the door.
-Remove the litte 10mm nut on the doors inside.
-Take the door-stopper out through the lower hole on the inside of the door.

Be aware as well, you will need something wide and thin to remove the door panels. The plastic clips are prone to breakage. They are available, but why replace if a gentle but firm lift can do the job? A wide paint scraper is best, wider the better.

And while you have the door panel off, don't forget to look for any loose pices in the bottom of the door. Often when the door check breaks, part of it end up in the bottom of the door and will rattle from time to time, especially when closing the door.

I just replaced both fronts on my W114. I wouldn't go with junkyard ones though. You may end up with ones not much better than what you have. They don't cost that much and are readily available.
