Post 1977 VIN Decoder Needed :

Just bought a 1977 450SLC, and have been searching everywhere to get some information on it. The VIN is not searchable on any site you would normally use to check a history report or even basic information about the car. I've seen some post's about VIN decoding or such, but can't find any with information about a VIN's with only numbers, if anyone can assist I would really appreciate the inforamtion, Thanks - and I'm sure there are many posts to come.

VIN Number:10702412017816

That should begin "117" not 107. Where are you finding your vin? It is a "W107" chassis. Try e-mail to: thomas.hanson@mbusa.com, the Classis Center.

I was given the vin by the seller of the vehicle it was the VIN that was posted on the ad - FYI the car is on it's way from California to Texas as we speak and will be here on Monday, but again, that was the VIN number that was provided on the ad.

I'll check again, Thanks.

this "serial/manufactured" number I have, is that an early production of the overall batch made, meaning, 17,816th one made, and does anyone happen to know how many were made and also maybe how many still exist?

Thanks guys

I think it's

107 = W107 series of cars..
024 = 450SLC model Meaning 4,5 liter V8, 2door -coupe..
1 = LHD
2 = Automatic transmission.
017816 = serial number.

Those are great cars but not that collectible so if your looking for something to compliment your 401k, you may need to find something else like a 500SLC. They made less then 3000 of those and they are still cheap as chips for what they are.

With best regards

Al

117 is not a valid chassis number.

BTW, the VIN arrived in the early 80's to standardize id numbers. Until the changeover, manufacturers had their own id scheme. In the cawse of MB's, the chassis id number was in the form as posted above, for instance, my 220Sb has a chassis number of 111.012-12-nnnnnn.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
