That typically is a sign that your injectors need cleaning or re-calibration. The properly tuned injector will spray a very fine mist of atomized fuel. Carbon on the tips will make it irregular, and therefore not burn properly. A tuned diesel doesnt smoke much at all except under heavy acceleration.
Diesels are the happiest on the highways.
Your injection pump is not meant to be adjusted, it is pre-set. The only adjustment is to time it when it is removed.
