Thats odd, first things first check the fluid level, other than that, i don't know/can't tell you what might be wrong.

Considering the age of the car, a complete overhaul would be in order. The trans from my 220S is still apart and will soon be together. I have all the parts.

Please don't drive it, the very expensive bands could be damaged or the clutch assembly steel plates could be worn. The clutch discs may also need to the replaced.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Before you go all out and replace/overhaul the tranny, take it to someone you trust. I had mine overhauled by a national chain, and I paid about $2000. Before the job though, they went through everything and actually assessed the problem.

I am by no means a transmission expert, but get the thing looked over before you pay a whole ton of $$ for a rebuild. If anything, think about finding one in a junk yard that you can bolt in ...

Did the car sit for a log time? If so the shift valves might be stuck. Take it to a shop that has vintage Mercedes experience.
