Question 1973 W115/220D Performance Question

Hello all.
As of May 13th I became the proud owner of a '73 220D converted to run on waste vegetable oil, which it does remarkably well. After driving it a few days, however, one of the heater lines overheated and melted a hole in the vacuum line that runs from the vacuum pump to the intake manifold.

Now, oddly enough, the car began to make more power after a hole was melted in that vacuum line. Any ideas why the car started making more power after the hole in the vacuum line appeared? Extensive searching has gotten me...nowhere.
