230/250/280SL BODY INDENT

A year or so ago, the owner of a 280SL showed me a way to tell if rust work had been done around the headlight bezel. If I remember correctly, he said there should be an indent in the body matching both indents, right and left side in the headlight bezel. Not just on the outside, but on the side toward the engine/hood.

Is my memory correct, or am I just imagining it?

I ask because I was looking at a '67 230SL yesterday and noted there was no such indent toward the engine side of the bezel. I was told by the seller it was only on the outside.

Not sure my description is worded well enough......

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Yes, there's tiny 1/2" crease on either side of the car that continues the line in the headlight chrome. It's on the inside, so the side closest to the front grill. This indentation is sometimes removed during a restoration since it's fabricated from lead and not sheet metal. Generally, this indicates the fenders were replaced. Another telltale sign is to look for the original spot welds around the inner lip of the fenders where the hood and fender meet. If those are missing, the fender was almost certainly replaced.

Excellent! That is exactly what I needed to know. Car I was looking at was a NY car for much of it's life--knew it had new floorpans and figured it must have had fender work.
Thanks much!
