1974 240D

I am thinking about buying one for $1000. Owner bought in Oregon and drove it back to Wisconsin. Speedometer shows 135k miles. He thought it might have came from Europe and had the speedometer changed out to read MPH. Owner claims it needs an inner tie rod end and the glow plugs only get current when in the cranking mode. The shift indicator stays on the Park position. What do you guys think? Any other things I should look for? I have only seen pictures. I am going to look at the car this weekend.

Thank you for any input. Deal or no Deal?

Hmm....where is it in Wisconsin? I could go with you to help look it over if it's closer to Milwaukee and help deal if I get to test drive it

I love my W115 240D. I like the chassis more than the W123 for the ergonomics.

The car is prone to rust, lift up the floormats and the trunk mat and look for rust.

It is odd to have a column shift car most all were console. As for the owner he doesn't know what he's talking about, US cars had US bumpers and MPH speedometers. It may have been a gray market car or European delivery and converted to US spec at the time. Also the owner doesn't apparently know much about the car if he is getting glow plugs only in cranking mode.....

Eagle river area. It is a four hour drive for me. Add a couple + to that for you. Should I buy it? I have a couple of teenage drivers and I was looking for a 3rd vehicle. Probably not the best car for them??
I have an itch to do some wrenching on real car.

Can you explain the glow plug thing?

Looks good.... but as diametricalbenz already mentioned, check for rust spots.

I just sold a radio and a speedometer cluster and a set of hubcaps on e-bay for this model. The parts are worth the asking price. Be sure it can be titled with no problems. Since it is considered an antique it should be exempt from emissions issues. There is a monofiliment line that is broken or needs adjustment in the shift window. Parts are still available. Easy fix. Be sure the tranny shifts smoothly. They go at 200,000+ miles lots of times. Good luck!

The seller also mentioned a vibration in the drive train at certain speeds. It goes away when above or below those speeds. Around 60mph is one of those speeds.???
