Damn nice car. There ought to be law against kids messing around with classics like the one you have. Good luck. Take good care of grandpa's jewel.

my opinion

this happened to my dads now my 77 450sl he had no idea the chain had broken and tried to re crank the engine the whole thing got pretty pricey.the replacement engine didnt work out and he was forced to have the original completely rebuilt that whole fiasco made a bill of about 7000 all together so my opinion start with a toatal engine rebuild of course this is the advice of a 16yr old.......

yeah i just got the whole engine rebuilt and part of the transmission had to be replaced. i was driving and all of a sudden the engine puddered off. i waited ten minutes and it started up fine. after that it wont stay fired unless you hold the ignition key all the way cranked. i took it to a shop and they rebuilt the starter and put in a new ignition switch and still the same outcome. i guess they are in the middle of trying to figure out the wiring for the ignition. anybody have a wiring diagram of the ignition systrem? they dont have books that go that far back for mercedes.

Have them check the electrical fuel pump relay circuit. Under "start" condition, a different circuit feeds the fuel pump relay, versus under "run" condition.
