Can anyone tell me what this car is?

Hello,
I am new to the Mercedes world, have owned BMW's most of my life and decided to dive into the world of Mercedes. I just purchased this vehicle and intend to restore it. I'm confused though. The title says it's a 1973 280. The door plate reads 250/8 and I have yet to see a 1973 280 with this steering wheel. The badge on the trunk claims it's a 280 and the valve cover looks different than the one wikipedia.com claims it should have. I hope someone here can give me some insight!

Could you tell us the VIN and engine ID? And a little of the car's history? (location, repair records, etc.)

Hi from down under.
That engine is most likely the previous incarnation of the 280, the SOHC M130. They used essentially the same block for the 230, 250, 280. The later 280 engine was DOHC, an M110 from memory.
And nutmegCT is right to ask for the full VIN. The engine number is on the side of the block, in board and down from the brake master cylinder stuff.
Cheers and enjoy

Can't be sure without a chassis number, but my guess a w114 250/8 with the wrong taillights and the wrong name tag. Whatever it is, it isn't quite right.

^ Right, which is exactly what belongs in a w114 250/8.

It's probably a W114 with the M130 280 engine, but could allso be a 250 engine. i just love looking at those big carburettors Must get a hefty fuel bill with those
The Twin-Cam M110 280 engine first came out in the W116 and W107 chassis. The W114 got the M110 in 74 or 75
After.
That car is probably "modernized" with newer taillights, steering wheel and maybe a bigger engine.
Check the numbers on the engine-block..

I liked what has been said by your wife "You really need to choose between me and your toys"!

This is really our problem in life...
Especially when the number of "toys" grow up!

Thanks God my wife is positive from this side

Good Luck

It seems like a standard W114 280.. Nothing special about it..
I guess it's closer to a 1974 model, because of the steering wheel wich was available on the late W114/115's.. The engine seems like a standard dual-carb 280 engine. Can't see the difference without further inspection..
Tail-lights are ok, they came i 1974, wich again puts the cr closer to a 1974 model..

1991 W140 400 SE - SOLD !!
1973 W115 200 -For sale as project.
