Info on this model

I have bought my first and not my last mercedes. Bought a 1991 420SEL and have restored it back to great condition. Love it so much I sold my brand new cadillac. Had it only a year and while very quick did not have the ride and feel of the Merc. Anyway I am on to a new project but know very little about this model. Anything to know about these?

The chassis is called a W108, your 420SEL is a W126. It looks like a 250S/SE and this model range started in 1966 and went to 1972 when it was replaced by the W116, the 450SE/SEL.

The W108 came with 6 cyls and V8's, 250S/SE, 280S/SE/SEL. The 280 SE/SEL came with 6's and either a 3.5 or 4.5 V8.

The W108 model is very simiar to the W111 Fintail model because the chassis and running gear are the same, the rear axle got disc brakes as opposed to the W111 rear drums. Many parts for either the 108 or 111 and the shorter W110 chassis models will fit either car and a part for your car may have a 111 part number or for my 111 will have a 108 part number.

The W109 is the luxury version with leather and air suspension, with various 6 cyl and V8 models, 300SEL 2.8, 3.0, 3.5, 4.5 and 6.3.

Please take some more pictures.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Are you reffering to w111 sedans? 'Cause w111 coupes and cabs also have disc in the back...As fa as the w111 sedans, I did not know that all w111 sedans had drums in the back...

No, the W11 had front disc brakes only (mfg. from 1963 onward) and only on the S and SE models. 190 and standard 220 had drum brakes all around. High feature W108's and all V-8 models received all around disc brakes from either ATE or Girling.

E55 5.5 W211
500E 5.0 W124
