column shift indicator

My column shift indicator is stuck on park (1972--250 w114). Can this be easily repaired?

Ray, I have the same issue with my W100 600. I had my mechanic send it out for repair. Don't know what the exact cost is for repair (as it is part of a whole instrument refurbish), however, the estimate is $400.

I don't really have any other issues with anything else in that part. The indicator is seperate from the other gages. Just a matter of getting to it! I'm guess you have to pull the whole gage setup out!

I believe their is a single thumb wheel type of nut behind the cluster accessed from below the dash at the left side of the column. The indicator uses a springloaded cable attached to a hook on the shifter bar and the end breaks off the cable. Repair is based on your creativity. Again if my memory serves me correctly.

Thats dead right Bill,but normally i just look under the column and check the hook on the shift rod. The cable is very light and they tend to be broken after 30+ years so just make sure it's still connnected.
Once you reconnect the wire cable you can adjust the 'reading' on the indicator by twisting the adjustable cable shroud on the rear of the dash cluster.

cable was broken at the indicator itself. So I purchased a used indicator and had it installed. Unfortunately the mechanic that fixed it also must have put the panel light rheostat in some sort of bind or something because it was very hard to turn then suddenly got easy to turn, but no longer works. So I'll have to now deal with it. Anybody know where I could get a panel rheostat.
