I have read in several places that the 108 cars were designed by Paul Bracq. However, a January 2008 article in "Classic Cars" (British) on the 300 SL gullwing has noted German Mercedes dealer/restorer Hans Kleissl of HK Engineering near Munich attributing the 300 SL as well as the 108 and 600 designs to Friedrich Geiger, the head of the Mercedes design department in the 50's and 60's, and he adds that:
"He's only known by insiders because he always preffered to remain in the background."
Can anybody clear up this apparent discrepancy?

There is a W108 owner's forum outside this site that can probably help you. I don't know the exact web site, but if you Google "W108" you'll find it. That's where you'll find the information you seek.

Not sure if Bracq was the head designer, however, he was influential in removing the fins from the rear flanks. He also had a hand in the W100 600s.

Hi folks,

I happen to be an acquaintance of Paul Bracq. The bottom line is that we are looking at team work. It is true that Bracq insisted on getting rid of the fins (applying the 1961 300SE rear end treatment).

And while Geiger may have been the "direktor", he is less likely to have done actual work than Bracq or also Sacco for that matter.

What is true is that they all spent considerable time looking at clay models under the lights to assess the "perceived quality" look sought for the model.
