1975 230 - what makes it more saleable?

I've been driving a 1975 230 for the past six months and sadly, it's time to sell it. If I could keep it I would, but I'll be leaving the country in a few weeks and it just can't come along to Australia.

The previous owner had made a huge mess of it - purple tints on the windows, dirt ground into the leather, a tree chopped up in the trunk... it was no surprise that he'd had to drop the prize to get a sale. It has trouble starting in the cold weather, which around here is only about 2-3 degrees C, but other than that it runs well, and after scraping off the purple tints and giving it a good clean-up, it's now a real head-turner.

I bought it because I could see that for $700 it was a good deal, but if I have to sell it, I want as much as I can get for it. What can I do to get more money out of my car? I'll be giving it a good cleaning of course, but with moving I don't have much money to put into repairs or tuning. If you were looking to buy my car, what would (or wouldn't) you want to see?

If you want the value of the car to increase make it look as close as possible to what it looked like when it rolled off the assembly line.

230 gassers don't have much value. Even a 240D/300D wouldn't have much value if it's really beat up. Clean it up and post pictures.

Your hardest problem will be finding a buyer, any buyer, for your car. Small, small pool of people who would want a 230, and of those that do, they know they can spend a few grand more and buy a low-mileage perfect one. In other words, I think your car is virtually unsellable. Clean it up as best as you can, ask for as little as you can, and be really, really glad you get any calls on it.

I'd say call a salvage yard and see if they will give you anything for it, and consider what you get from the $700 you paid as a cost of driving for six months. Cleaning it up is a relative thing, and from the sound of what you're working with, you don't have that much energy. Like the other posters say, the car isn't desirable for anything but transportation, and it's not very good at that, so it's not worth much. Given the abuse this car has suffered, it's worth even less. Classic "lipstick on a pig." If you were thinking you would make much on the deal, it probably won't happen, and a lot of effort on your part won't pay off.

Good luck.
