She blew...

Oui oui... A sad day it is for my little '75 240D.

A few weeks ago, temps got down into twenties. My car had poor compression, so obviously did not start. I waited a few weeks until the temp camp up to the fifties to start it. No go. It is only firing on 1 cylinder (and only sometimes). Fuel is going to each injector and the GPs are good. I opened the oil cap and cranked. Each compression stroke... puff... a nice white cloud would come out. Squirted a tiny bit of ether in intake, skipped the GPs and cranked. Nothing. I pulled out the glow plugs and cranked it over. Had a nice bit of oil come out of the holes.

Sigh

Well... I am thinking I will at least pull the head and see if the pistons and walls look okay. I might be willing to replace the rings if need be. Not sure I am willing to pay to have the engine rebuilt.

Honestly haven't got a clue. The odometer in these old w115s is only 5 digits. I finished rolling it over once. I only put about 12K on it, and the previous owner about 18. I would guess a minimum of 208K, but quite possibly 308 or 408K.

And you've had a compression test done?

I did a couple months back since I was concerned by hard starting. Was pretty bad. I believe it was about:
1 - 265
2 - 310
3 - 280
4 - 300

It had also been burning oil... I did not record exactly how much.. Thinking maybe quart every 400 miles

First, DO NOT use ether or starting fluid on the engine, that may have damaged the rings even further thereby compounding your problem.

Were the valves adjusted? If not that would significantly reduce the ability to start the engine even in 50F weather.

Add cetane booster or biodiesel to help with the cold combustion. If it's 20F use the cetane booster and or low percentage biodiesel.

My 74 was burning 1 quart per 80 miles.

Just wondering why is it bad to use starting fluid?

Tends to explode with compression, hence not recommended for diesels.

I adjusted the valves a couple thousand miles ago. I pulled the cover and double checked, still right on. Yea, I know starting fluid is terrible to use. I only used a tiny tiny squirt and no glow plugs to be as safe as possible. I do not believe it ever burned, I would have heard it.

There is a weak biodiesel blend in the tank now, should be about 10%.

I have never been able to start the car below about 34 degrees (much less 20!) without plugging it in. It would always just make a little swoosh sound as each cylinder fired, never would burn well enough to start.

The glow plugs are newer pencil style, only a few months old. I pulled them and tested. All glow nice and hot and little resistance.
