Considering the price of the part and the shipping, getting a whole car into south africa sourced from Australia or the islands north of it is probably the same basic cost as getting an automatic transmission, torque converter, mounting plate and drive shaft (and gettint it all installed). Nice thing about the conversion is that it can be reversed at will if you don't take the temptation to sell the parts after.

Problem solved.

Turns out the diff has a crapload of play in it, which doesn't help matters. Also the propshaft needs to be balanced, which also added to the overall issue.

Merc is going in at the end of the month to have diff rebuilt and propshaft sorted.

Presently I am rebuilding my C123 280 from 4-speed manual to automatic transmission.
First part is to understand and find out, what exactly you need to change, for curent year car. Because there are small changes after every few years.
Second part is to find all these parts I lost round about 2 months while find right gearbox (I searched used) for my 1978 MB.
Third are installation. If you, or some of your friends, are mechanic, change takes one day (if you have all required parts...but I think its impossible....always something hapens )

Today, first time after few months, my car drived in garage by itself
