How to 'read' oil dipstick in M130 motor
just bought via a private sale a 1971 280S, a W114 with M130 motor, auto trans, air con. Drove quite well on test drive.
Once purchased, engine ran rough - Murphy's Law. I removed the spark plugs and they all were very sooty /oily. Replacing plugs resulted in smoother running engine.
However, checked oil level, observed that cold level was considerably above the two kinks in the dip stick, presumably set to indicate min and max levels. When engine was stopped and oil level checked, oil level was on top mark. After suitable time to cool down, oil level was well above top mark.
Question - should dip stick level be read with engine hot or cold?
