Post Considering buying a MB... which deisel to buy, thinking of w115 or w123?

Im considering buying a diesel and have been reading about them for some time. I want something reliable and know MB diesels are very much that. can anyone give me a good comparison as pros and cons and also what common problems to look for with both. the w123 is attractive since its newer and faster (turbo) but does the turbo have any probs if not what does? i have heard the w123's are best from 80-85, what makes that true? id much rather have the looks of the w115 but its 30+ years old and i have a bmw 2002 that needs restoring so im not looking for another project tho i dont want to pay $$$ for a restored model. Guess Id say im looking for a decent daily driver. whats an average/good price range for the each of these? i see the w123's in my area go from 600-2k but dont usually see the w115's often. i may even consider the w124 since ive seen them under 1k once in a while. though they are more current i dont think they are that fun to look at. kbb sais an 88 190d with 200k should be around 1k. thanks in advance for the help!

Firstly a 115 will 30-40 years old not 20 and the last W123 was built in 1980 so thats 28 years ago. Why not buy a later Diesel like a 190 D?

not too big of a fan of that body although as i wrote, im considering them. i thought the w123 was from 76-85 which is what i was thinking of when i wrote 20+ yrs old. from what i hear the 80-85 is the way to go but like the looks the older they get. just concerned about reliability with age.

either one is good

the 115s and 123s are both good cars given the right maintenance. A bit of advice on turbo diesels, be careful not to blow your engine when it is cold and the car hasnt warmed up yet, because the turbo will do it to you. Best 115 would be your 220d, hopefully no rust A 123 240d with no options is another good car because there isnt anything to break unlike the 300cd and 300d which have more options that always wear with age. If you know where to find good mbs for cheap let me know because im in va and will make the trip for a good deal.

My 79' 240D takes offense that the 80's are better

My good friend and helpful, knowledgeable, and smart mechanic drives both 115 and 123. I have only owned the 123 and love it. Personally, I think the style of the 123 looks better (I'm biased). As for reliability, from what I hear they are both solid. My mechanic friend drives his for 500k then sells them and they will probably go for another 500k! Mechanically, these cars are amazing. But expect to replace all the rubber on a car this old. They leak like a sieve and have more drain holes (scuppers) than a Maine Lobster boat! So check beneath the floor mats and look closely for rust etc..

PS did I mention that I LOVE MY 240D? Best car I have ever owned.

Girls like me love the 123's!

I just can't wrap my mind around owning a diesel. MAYBE a turbo diesel, but then only a Volkswagen. I drove a 240d for a week, and it was almost criminally gutless. I'm a much bigger fan of the gas powered classics...
