How to decipher a 1974 280CE VIN

I am trying to find a specific 1974 280CE. I have the VIN, however no search engines accept the VIN number and I am unable to decode.

VIN 114 xxx-xx-xxxxx3

2Door, Automatic, S-6 with EFI

Car was Mfg in Germany for MB of Japan (bought / used by US Embassy in Japan). Car was brought back to Texas and then to British Columbia, Canada. I sold in 1998 and now trying to track it down.

Suggestion on how decode a pre '77 MB VIN and how to find a car MIA for 10 years?

Thanks in advance, Peter

things like carfax are basically useless for pre-1980 models because there is no vin standard before that in the US.

Your best bet is to find the buyer in '98. The next best thing is go to the DMV in the state the buyer was in and ask for the information about the registration records for the vin. They are available (in the US at least) if you ask the right question and fill out the correct paperwork (under FOI, freedom of information).

The third way is to visit every benz forum you can think of and ask. Somebody has heard of it, they might well speak up.
