First gear whine

Hi folks,

Is there any way to get the first gear in my 4 speed manual transmission to be quieter - it sounds like a straight cut gear

This is from a W126 with an M110. I changed the oil (ATF+additive) to no avail

I thought of using regular transmission oil but MBZ does not recommend it - there must be a reason right ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you just buy the car or did the sound appear all of the sudden?

First gear whine

Hi

It's been like that ever since I bought it a year ago. I did a fluid change to the proper ATF and it has improved a bit. Both the diff and the manual gearbox emit acceptable noise levels on the highway in 2nd ,3rd and 4th gear but first is a "whiner" that sounds a bit like straight cut gear (even though it is not a straight cut gear).

I thought of mixing the ATF with high grade 75-90 gearbox oil. Any thoughts on doing this ?

You have a worn bearing in the "cluster" gears. A 50/50 mix of 90 and ATF will not cure the noise but will cut it down a bit and allow the transmission to last a little longer. It's on it's way out I'm afraid and has probably been damaged by abuse by a previous owner. They normally silent in any gear. Thats an unusual combination though,I have owned w114's and And W123's with the m110 and manual transmission but i have never thought any one would order a W126 with manual.

W126 with manual

Hi

A W126 with a manual gearbox and M110 engine is a very common configuration outside America. I only wish it were a 5 speed.

In France, people simply don't like automatic transmissions...probably because they were power eaters and increase fuel consumption many years ago. Their reputation is quite tarnished

Thanks for he insight !
