W114 280CE Gearbox Dipstick

Hello All,

After owning a 450SLC, I have added a 280CE to the collection. Very happy with it.

However, the gearbox is a little problematic, sometimes after standing in the traffic, it would not pull away in gear until changing to N and then D again.

I looked at the gearbox oil dipstick. There are two humps, the car was hot, driving for 6 miles and left in P and handbrake for 5 minutes.

The oil level is below the bottom hump, what does the two humps mean? Top one is the one I should fill up to?

I would really appreciate your help.

transmission fluid expands when warmed up. The cold level on the dipstick can look a lot lower than the warm level, so one usually checks it warm, but not after a hard ride.

Park the car on a level surface and put the emergency brake on. Then cycle the transmission through all its gears (a second or two per gear is fine). Put it back in park before checking the fluid level.

That said, there should be a section on the dipstick with cross-hatched lines. That is the operating range for your fluid level. Below that area, put more in (Dextron will do). Try not to add more than 8 ounces (half a pint) at a time. Let the new fluid warm up before adding more.
