Why replace the loom or remove earth points? .I have piles of old looms here for all sorts of Mercs right up to 1990 W126's and all are perfectly servicible. Sometimes the insulation on the ends of leads gets affected by heat on FI engines and the cotton braiding becomes dirty but otherwise the looms will last forever. We are dealing with Daimler Benz here guys not GM. The reason Mercedes have those seperate earth points is for assembly purposes when the cars are being built and reliability, If it were a lesser make the body would be the main earth connection with earth return via the various fittings which always give problems. I have always found electrical problems on Mercedes are ALWAYS the components on the end of the wire.. Never the wire itself.I discount component abuse and stupidity such as overloading circuits with pieces of wire instead of fuses and halfwit stereo installers .

I would agree up to a point. While I'm a huge fan of Mercedes engineering and reliability, the wiring in my Benz became brittle, and the insulation started cracking. While the copper inside doesn't dissolve, it tended to short out in time. I had replaced the loom once, and it aleviated a lot of smaller problems that I couldn't trace down ...
