inspection failed due to unbalanced front brakes

Dear All,

today I brought my Coupe 3.5 to inspection in view of registering it. Evereithing was fine apart form the front left brake which is less powerful than the right one. Calipers have been overhauled, disks and hoses are new, I bleeded both sides but the problem remains. The pedal is a bit soft. Any Idea where I should look first?

In case I fail to sort it out myself, who is doing a good job on these cars in or around Washington DC?

Thanks in advance

Gael

It could be as simple as needing to bled your brake lines. Spongy pressure would be consistent with that. It might be a good time to flush your brake lines if you haven't done that within the last couple of years. If your brake lines have been bled properly then the problem could be in the master cylinder.

I'd say master cylinder as well. You say you bleeded both sides, right Gael?

I agree that you should bleed the brakes to get rid of the soft pedal.

JCP Motorsports in Alexandria, American Service Center in Arlington, and Don Pool in Falls Church are about the only reliable places for work on older cars.

I spoke to Gael, a Frenchman, and he also sent me a message. The problem is that the intermediate brake pipe between the front caliper and the brake hose was replaced at some time with a home made version. This home made version was not properly attached and developed a stress fracture causing a brake fluid leak. The car faile DC inspection because of the leak.

Gael went to the dealer in Bethesda who told him the brake pipe is NLA. I e-mailed Tom Hanson at the Classic Center who said the dealer was wrong and that both left and right are available and supplied part numbers. I spoke to Gael, gave him the part numbers and he will order and install them.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Shockingly, it appears the D.C. inspection system worked, as intended!
