thinking of fuel tank to cell conversion/ideas?

hello all i have 1974 280se w116 body and i am going to the desert (iraq)in a few months. iv'e been thinking about moving the fuel tank in the benz from behind the seat to the trunk floor when i get back; essentialy cutting out the spare tire area and replacing it with cell. then getting a smaller spare and put it in the pockets on side of the trunk. theres a mechanic here who does race cars and said fabbing parts shouldnt be a problem. here's my dillema has anyone here done something like this? what tanks should i look for ive seen them cost $200-$2000. the fuel pump is outside the tank but are there any other things i should be careful for. the whole reason for the move is because i want to open up the trunk area a little more for my custom sound system. once i do that i can customize the trunk and make it look a lot cleaner and still have room for groceries lol. give your honest thoughts, opinions, and advice please

I'd be really wary about putting extra cells in the trunk - there's almost no protection from an accident there, and if you get hit, they could leak and cause a lot of problems. (like a fiery, screaming death - ouch)

lol yeah that could hurt. the gas tank is already in the trunk though. it's right behind the rear passenger seat.i had holes cut for the rear speakers and they arent in those locations anymore, but it's kinda creepy when the radio is off i can hear the fuel sloshing around.

Mercedes isn't the easiest cars to put stero in, because of the fueltank-location..
But, removing the original tank just to put in som more speakers, amps or so ??
That's crazy talk if you ask me..
Even if you think of putting in plexiglas, amp-boxes, neon light etc.. That would be much easier with the original tank, instead of the fuel-cell..
The original fueltank placement is placed between the rear suspension"towers" for a reason. It's the safest place to put it, if you must have it inside the car..
Most people with big stereo's drop the spare wheel, and put in a couple of tire-fix-boxes instead.. This way you get more space in the rear..
