I am in the camp of thinking these cars are great. I am getting about 30-32 MPG at 65 MPH with my 75 240D. That said, the cars are cheap these days with reasons. They are getting OLD! I have already fixed a lot of problems with my car, and there are still plenty more. My injection pump was bad when I bought the car (was supplying to much fuel). The vacuum pump needed a new diaphram, was leaking oil into the intake. The injector nozzles were a bit worn, so I replaced them. Glow plugs were pretty much burned out. Replaced those. My heater blower does not work (although the air that gets blown through the system at 65 MPH is enough heat for me). Humm yea...
Some parts are expensive, some are not. For the most part, the engine is very tough and should not need a lot of repairs before it is worn out. Some say it is a pointless test, but I think it has some merit. Take the oil cap off when the engine is running. Any gases that come out are from worn rings/cylinders. There will probably be some coming out and thats normal. If it is a giant cloud, I would forget about it. Poor compression and you will have trouble starting the diesel when it gets cold. Could also cause you to burn oil.
Nether less, the old diesels are great and can go many miles if maintained a bit.
Don't expect the car to accelerate very fast. People are always switching lanes to get ahead of me after a stop light. I think the engine is rated at 62 HP.
Anyway, these are great cars. Expect one this old to need a little work now and then though :-)
