Groaning noise when turning

I am the relatively new owner of a 1972 280 SEL 4.5L There is a groaning/whining noise when I turn, particularly noticeable at low speeds. It is not tire noise, it sounds to me like the power steering pump, though it may be other suspension items. Is this normal? The power steering has fluid. There is no odd steering feedback. The car has recently been lubed with fresh grease. Any ideas on what if anything I should do? thanks

Nope, not normal. Mine doesn't do that. Is it only one direction, or does the groan happen while turning in either direction? Two things come to mind - wheel bearings and the power steering pump. When stopped and turning the wheel, do you hear anything?

I'd bet PS pump. Check the fluid level and the fittings for leakage. The W108 I had 25 years ago had chronic PS pump problems. The cover seal sometimes leaks, and the metal to rubber fitting on the hoses are also problem areas. That's a 25 year-old memory, but I hope it helps.
