Question 1977 240D 4-spd?

Ok ya'll, I have found a 1977 240D 4-spd and was wondering how reliable these cars are and what it takes to maintain it. The guy says it ryns good but he thinks the heater core is cloged because when you turn heat on the coolant doesn't flow and it begins to get hot?? Says when you run without heat it runs about 195. I have never heard of anything like this and he thinks it could be bubble in core or cloged? The car is showing 180,000 and the A/C belt is off so? What is this thing worth? Any oppinons? He's asking $1500. Says has surface rust and nothing major. Also said gets 35 MPG?

Hello 442john,

I just bought a 1977 240D.

Heres' the story....

Same old sh--, heard it a zillion times....father is old, a little senile, kids see an opportunity to get power of attorney, put the old guy in a nursing home, take his 240D car away, take over his house & financial assets for their own personal gain.

They really wanted a fast BMW, so when they drove the 240D, they were really disappointed with the slow & sluggish performance.

Anyway, they put the car online (Craigslist). I responded & bought the car for $3500. What a great car!! its got 88,000 original miles, and slight rust on the quarter panels. I insured it as a collector car, and they told me that it can be worth 1500 to $14,000, depending on condition.

I'll post a photo soon on this site, or I can email you one.

With the miles you have, I would get the radiator re-cored (about $400). it should be OK then. I had to do it with a 1971 I had.

Drop me a line.
