I've been in love with the old (pre-1980s) MB diesels for a long time, and am hoping to buy one soon. There are two for sale that have caught my eye recently. One is a 1960 180Db, going for $3,750, and the other is a 1964 190Dc going for $1,800.
I've seen the 180Db first hand; it's in fair-ish condition cosmetically, but I don't know how it is mechanically yet. There's a bit of obvious rust on the front fender, the paint is a bit faded worn in places, and the taillights would need to be either fixed or replaced. The interior looks serviceable, but not really pretty.
The 190Dc seems in much better cosmetic condition (it's a gorgeous turquoise color...drool...). All the description says is "Work recently done on it, includes plenty of spare parts. Runs great & on bio diesel. New clutch, fast glow plugs." I've included a couple of pictures.
Since I'm completely new to both MBs and diesels, I'm hoping for some input on a) how difficult these cars are to maintain, esp. for beginners (I don't have a lot of working knowledge when it comes to cars, but I learn fast, have a few -- non-diesel
-- mechanics in the family, and am at least somewhat mechanically inclined myself.) and b) what kinds of questions I should ask the seller/s, or the mechanic I have check the car out before purchase? I know rust can be a problem; at what point is it unacceptable? Are there any other major issues I should keep an eye out for? Etc, etc, etc.
I have posted this in both the Vintage Mercedes-Benz forum and the New Member Introduction; I really appreciate any help or advice you can give!
