W108 four speed - pretty rare?

Would a four speed 108 be considered fairly uncommon?

Relative to what? If it's a European version, it probably isn't all that rare. If it's a 250 or a 280S probably nobody would care. If it's a 280SE and it's in the US, it's probably pretty uncommon. I don't know how many or if any manual transmission W108s were sent to the U.S. The lower power versions may have been plentiful.

If you already know the answer, why are you asking the question? If you don't, Google W108 and ask one of the groups that owns them. Beyond the speculation above, that's all the help I have.

Thanks; didn't know the answer ahead of time.

It is a US spec 280SE. And it may soon be living in your former town.

Most US models were not offered with stick shifts for marketing reasons. They are common in other markets. I owned a stick shift 108 when I was in Germany in the 80's.

Early W108's were available with 4 speeds, and in some rare cases 5 speeds. Floor shift was available at no extra cost. It looks like a 280S/SE.

I think the rare ones are the 280SE with a 5 speed and 6 cylinder and there is a 280SE / 300SEL 3.5 that was also available with a 4 speed manual.

SE, a good dash, AC, white wheel, good wood, and manual trans make for a good combination.
