"It seems that it is VERY expensive to repair, any ideas?"
Easy one to solve - don't ever repair one. Buy good second hand ones off Ebay or good people on these sites or members of the local MB club.
Many people don't realise that there can be filters in the electric fuel pump - sometimes these can block and people don't realise it, and they think the injection pump is gone and so give up.
I have both carb and F.I finnies (including a 220SE running carbs), and the FI ones are nicer in my opinion. All the racing finnies that I know of were the FI models rather than the carbie models, and those cars did some long tough races, so the system is great when it is in good order. But either model that has been sorted and looked after should go well. It doesn't matter what fuel delivery system your motor has, if it is not working correctly, and you don't have the time/knowledge/money/patience to fix it yourself or get someone else to fix it, then you are in for a rough time.
My 220SE that has carbs seems to run a W114 electric fuel pump. There seems to be a few bodgy wiring changes too, but I don't know what they all are.
