Help Please! Vintage 1961 300SEL

Hi everyone. I am new to this and thought I may be able to get some advice. My father has been given an old 300SEL for a business debt. I have tried to do some research on it and am coming up with nothing. The car is an ex diplomat car located in Australia. It even has a complete well oiled spare engine with it (new!!). The car runs well and is beautiful.

From the information that I can find it seems that these were not made in 1961?

The information that I have is that it has the airbag suspension and all the goodies and that the model code is W122.

If anyone can tell me more about this model I would be very appreciative. I dont even know what it is worth!

Thanks

Doug

Please take a pic of the car and post it. There were no 300SEL's produced in 1961.

There is this site for the round body 300's:

Mercedes Benz 3-0-0 Club - Frontpage

and the fintail style W111 and W112 300SE's:

300SE_Main_Page_1

300SE_Photos_page_1

Near Manassas Va. '65 220S, 2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, '99 Volvo V70, '72 350SL 4 speed

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Hi Doug,
The information you have doesn't add up I am afraid. A ponton (or roundie) is a code W121, and a finnie is code W111 or W112. But as Wbain says, there are no '61 W112 300SEL's. How did you get that date? If the steering wheel is original, there may be a build date on the back of the horn pad. But otherwise, I think you have to get a data card to find out the year of the build.
Are you located in Australia? I am in Brisbane. I have lots of info on these cars and people who can help you if you need it. Even a few that would love to take the car off your hands if your dad doesn't want it!!
Cheers, Drew

I seem to recall a German market import vehicle of a very early version of the 300SEL. I had seen this vehicle in the early 1970's. This 4 door sedan did not have the winglets but the quarter panels did resemble that of the 220SEb coupe. The engine was a FI straight OHC 6 mounted at a slight slant. I was told that it was the same engine used in the 300 roadster . It was equiped with a large generator mounted high up and had a belt driven pump for the adjustable front suspension. Could this be the same type of 300SEL? Pictures would help to determin this.

I believe the W112 300SE LWB was not in production until 1963. I bet this is what it is, maybe with a 300SEL badge.
