W114 Driveability Problems

We have a 1976 280C daily driver. When we brought this car back to life after many years in Southern California, the last thing we did was tires and suspension. The as-received tires were hard as a rock and the front control arm bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends were shot, but the car had perfect directional stability.

After rebuilding the front end and having a full alignment done at the local dealer, we had new Michelin Harmonys fitted. Shocks are new Bilstein B36-0525/B46-0535.

Here's the problem: At highway speeds, the car will wander about in its lane ever so slightly, requiring constant attention at the wheel. Mercedes assures me that the alignment was correct, and the front end is tight. Their only suggestion (not a strong one) was to replace the rear springs (rather soft) and rear suspension components as needed.

Has anyone had a similar problem or have any suggestions on where to look? This is quite disturbing, particularly in a headwind, and we would like to find a short path to a fix.

does the steering wheel itself feel firm or loose when you turn it?

I had similar issues with my w114 280CE, was the steering shaft coupling, connects the steering shaft into the steering box.

There is something definately wrong, these things should be very nice to drive, holding to the road with ease and drive straight and true
