Starting 1974 MB 240d/115W
I just brought home a very clean (mint?) 74 240d/115W, automatic transmission. The outside, yellow, and the inside, brown, are in nearly perfect condition as it has sat in my god mothers garage for 15-20 years.
The issue is that when I turn the key nothing happens at all, except the red dash light coming on. No starter noise or anything. I don't know if there was a problem before I received it as she does not remember (dementia). I know I need to drain and refill all of the fluids, diesel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc and probably the plugs.
But with no starting action or sound at all can anyone suggest where to begin with this problem. The odometer says 34,000 and given what she tells me how she used it might be 134,000, but could be 234,000 since there was one owner prior to her when she bought it in the early to mid 80's.
I am able to turn the fan and the crankshaft and all other connections are turning so it appears that the engine is not seized. (?)
I have a 2007 R320cdi sitting next to the 240d so it will be a kick to get this old dame running again, hopefully.
Your advice is appreciated.
A proud 240d owner.
