I'm new here, but not new to vintage German cars. I have been involved in vintage VWs for 28 years now, and own 3 (thebugshop.org) and also am part owner in a web based, hobby/business making parts for the earliest of VWs (zarwerks.com). I am about as hardcore a vintage purist as they come, hopefully others here are as well. I have '57, '51 and '50 VW Beetles.
Here is a pic of my '50:
And my '57:
The '51 has about 5+ years of resto work left on it, and too ugly to post.
Anyway, I'm in the early stages of looking into 2 seater MB 'verts and want to buy one for my wife in the next 1-2 years probably (20 yr anniversary coming up, I'm seeing a 280 with a big red bow on it
). I have found that I can get 70s-80s ones pretty cheap and was looking at those, but all I had to do was see a few pics of the 230/280s and I'm convinced that is what I want to get, that has the most character, and probably is the best investment.
I was just surfing Hemmings ads and noticed that the 230s were made in the mid-60s, then 280s.... what would be useful is a quick history on the 2 seater "SLs". Is there such a site?
And where is the most active online classifieds site to start looking at offerings for sale? Where do all the "SL-Folk" hang out? Here? Other places?
I do not want a project (have one already, thanks), I want a turn key driver, either an original, or good-exc restoration. I do not expect to find one for $7k either. I am convinced that buying the right car, and doing the research first, is a good investment. I can't drive my mutual funds around on sunny days.
TIA for any help. I have always loved the look of the 280s... life is short and the wife is lamenting that I bought her a Camry this year. Now THAT is an exciting car....
