adding speakers to a '75 240D

i have one single speaker in the middle of the dash, i was curious if anyone has fabricated something either in the doors, or the ledge behind the back seat for some small speakers. I know how to do all the work, i was just curious if anyone knew some good places to stick some 6x9's, and how difficult something like that might be.

Typically...

speakers are added in the front kick panels [there are holes in the chassis behind the black press-board pieces] and in the rear parcel shelf above the back seat. On a '75 there should already be two speaker holes for oval speakers punched into the sheet metal beneath the shelf piece. You will need to cut holes in the carpet covered shelf piece, which can be removed to do it properly, once the rear seat back is removed from the car.

Open the trunk and take a peek and you should see what I am talking about, vis-a-vis the cut-outs.

Speakers in the front doors are problematical, as the door pockets get in the way of an installation that will clear the window/regulator assembly.

Good luck,

JR

i plan on using the 2 above-referenced locations. front kick panels and rear parcel shelf.

i have the advantage of missing my parcel shelf at the moment, so i need to fabricate one anyway. the kick panel enclosures will be made from fiberglass and will resemble these:

One advantage to doing this is you can basically install any size speaker you want. I plan to go with 6-1/2 in front and 6x9 in the back.

the other thing to consider is head unit placement. i'm installing a modern head unit under the dash, somewhat hidden, while retaining the factory AM radio and single speaker. this will make the car look less altered. you could also try mounting a head unit in the glove box.
