We really need a picture here.

The idle solenoids should get 12V when the ignition is turned on. That will cause them to open and allow gas or air or both (not sure which) into the idle circuit. Obviously, when you shut the ignition off, they close and prevent gas vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.

It sounds like you may have disconnected the electric chokes. This is not a good thing as it will take too long for them to open. Can you make sure that those wires get power only with the ignition on? If so, you might be able to tap into them to power the solenoids.

idle insanely high rpm now

Hey all! In the saga of this car, I am now the current owner, either that or a 250C that I just bought has a remarkably similar history.

Currently the idle speed is much higher than it should be, and new idle solenoids are hooked up to the only wires in that "neighborhood" under the hood.

Should the electric choke mechanisms also have power on ignition?

I would love a wiring diagram for this car, there are a lot of wires that look "extra".
