240D Won't Start, but cranks forever

i have a 1975 240D, i ran it last night absolutely perfectly, nothing was weird, but i tried to start it this morning, and it cranked for about 5 seconds, and didn't do anything, it usually starts right up. i figured it might not be getting fuel, so i primed it, and the same thing is happening.... any suggestions? I've only had the car for a week, so i don't really know exactly what i'm doing, to be honest

hi mate,

question, do you park your car on a flat surface or is there an incline?

Is there enough desiel in it?

I could be way off, but its possible you chain has snapped or teeth have broken. This will result in the car forever cranking over with no sign of firing up.

I suggest you open the oil filler cap look directly into it, have someone crank her over and you look to see if the cams are moving. If they are moving, it may just be a coil/ ingition lead issue, may be even dampness.

If the cams do not move, I suggest a small funeral gathering and sausage rolls as a light snack for after the service.

it did rain a whole lot... does that mean, once it dries outside it'll start again? oh, and the only slant is a very slight grade to the passenger side of the car.

i just did some inspecting, and i think the glow plugs went... thats my first hypothesis, so i'll check those out tomorrow and see what's going on

There is a fuse link in the glow plug circuit. Be sure to check that. Your glow indicator on the dash should get real bright if the circuit is working properly. (You have that knob that you have to pull out and hold to get the glow plugs hot and then crank, right?) Diesels don't have ignition wires, etc. so moisture shouldn't be much of a problem. Good luck.
