What to buy as a daily drier? Any help and advice appreciated!
I'm looking to buy an old girl to run as a daily driver, and have narrowed it down to three options. Depending on how it goes, I might end up running it for 6-12 months, then buying a new car to use as daily and keeping the Benz.
W108 280SE - Happy with a 2.8 or a 3.5, this is my number one choice. Hopefully find one with A/C and I'm not buying a junker, I want something in very good condition with a comprehensive history. I hear the mechanical fuel injection can be serious trouble if it goes wrong, and parts are hard to find now. Am I right or misinformed? Don't need the 109's air suspension.
W114/115 230.6/250.6 - I have a soft spot for the little compacts, but I'm told they have rather horrible fuel consumption, with the carby engine. What are they like otherwise as cars? I've never even sat in one. Hard to find with A/C, but they exist, and once again, I'd buy a near concourse one as it seems they're worth nothing.
W116 280SE - I quite like the look (not so much as the two prior), but the interior is modern, they all have A/C and are generally quite spec'd up. The 450 would probably burn a bit too much petrol for my liking, and I'm led to believe is more expensive to run.
I drive every day, mainly in the city, and probably once a fortnight get out on the open road. I want something comfortable, reliable, and not stupidly expensive to run - I'm not expecting it to be cheap though.
If you had your pick of the three, what would you get, and why? I'm currently overseas, away from home, so I'll be getting someone else to inspect the car for me, so comprehensive advice is appreciated in terms of what they're like to drive and live with.
With many thanks,
