I have a 1973 Mercedes 450SLC that has a light scuffing sound when making left turns coming from the left rear . If I accelerate while turning left I get a horrible grinding /grating sound from the left rear side . How do I check the axles on this vehicle ,Any ideas on what I should be looking for will be greatly appreciated
you have a wheel bearing or homo-kinetic joint issue going on. Get the car on a lift and inspect the hub and half-shafts for bearing/seal and/or joint boot failure.
I would suggest that you refrain from driving the vehicle until you get the matter checked out.
