170 Phaeton

Hi;

I'm new to this forum and was hoping you guys could help me out . My neighbor claims to have a 1951 170 phaeton that he's thinking about selling. To be honest I've never heard of or seen one. Would anybody have any info,links,etc. Thanks,Scott

it wont be a a "phaeton" ( 4 doors) more like a cabrio.
This's a 170 Roadster.

This is a Cabrio.

170 D ( diesel!) Police open tourer .

Same car from behind.

The 170 was the car which saved Daimler after ww2 ,mainly because the tooling was all there was left after allied bombing efforts.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

170 Phaeton

Thanks for the info. I have a bit of an update on the car. Its called a 170Da OTP, I guess it's a very limited body style. Guess thats why I've never heard of it. I'll try to get over there soon and see if I can snap some pics.I also forgot to mention in the original post that it is a four door

That explains a lot. the type designation is W170 Deisel type A ,open top phaeton.
If it were mine I would go directly to Daimler AG and check with Archives section because that is possibly a rebuilt prewar car . Mercedes rebuilt a lot of 170's in the years after WW2 to keep the plant going.
Got any pictures?

In relation to my post,the two door car was the only open version available to the public .
BUT,there were these KDf wagens.Which is what I suspect your car is.

here is a desert version of the 170Da . One of my uncles was in the allied long range desert group and chased cars like across the western desert,leading to a lifetime love of Mercedes.Even after spending the end of the war in Colditz after being captured.
