How do I "shine" the valve cover ?

Hi.
Just wanted some thoughts on how to make the valve cover look better.
12 years ago I restored a 1970 230.6.. And then I used wet-sanding paper at first, then Autosol chrome polish to finish it off...
And I think that it might have been a little "overkill" with the Autosol..
Judge for yourself:

How would you make THIS valve cover look much better ?

Polishing compound and...

a buffing wheel; however, bear in mind that when the car was brand new it did not have a "polished" valve cover, but more of a matte finish.

As an alternative, spray the coven down with brake cleaner to get most of the gunk off, and call it a day...

Ok, I kind of hoped that it would be possible to get that "matt" finish back again..
Because I think the polished look was a bit overkill..

Maybe just wetsanding will du the trick.. ?

If the valve cover is made of aluminum, you might want to have it satin anodized.

Actually...

Aside from some corrosion at the front of the cover, it does not look too bad.

A fine "bead blasting" will return the matte or satin finish, but would likely be more costly than locating a good used cover in near new looking condition.

I think I would worry more about the rust issues, etc., at this juncture, and just thoroughly clean the valve cover for now.

Good luck on the project.

Check the wheel cleaning products at GrandKragenPepZoneMart, and look for one that's not for painted or polished wheels. They're fairly-mild acid, and will return the surface to a clean, just-cast look.

The OP is...

in Norway. Good idea, but I don't think "GrandKragenPepZoneMart" is going to work for him.
