Question 230 Fuel Economy

Hi -- I've got a pristine 75 230 sedan, 64k original miles, that runs like a clock -- except that it gets HORRENDOUS gas mileage. I'm lucky if I get 15 mpg on a tank -- it's usually more like 12. I know it's a low powered (93 CA hp) motor in a heavy car (3,000+ lbs), and it's not a diesel -- but surely I should get better than that? Maybe not...I don't know. I would greatly appreciate some feedback:
1. Is this normal?
2. If not, any suggestions as to what i can do to improve matters?

I JUST had a tune-up.

Thanks, Jeff

Tune UP or Tune DOWN ?

Anyway, is a 230.4 or a 230.6 ?
I remember getting aprx 1.2 liters, in my 230.6 (W114), per 10km that is. Wich would mean 17MPG..

Back when I had a...

W114, a 250/8, mixed driving was around 15, stop and go in town was about 12 and 19-20 on the road at 70 MPH.

That car had a whole lot less in the way of emissions controls than your 230 has, and quite a few more HP.

You said it best: "I know it's a low powered (93 CA hp) motor in a heavy car..."

Technology has come a long way since the 1970's; I currently get 19-20 MPG mixed driving and 27 MPG on the highway at 70 MPH with my V-8 powered E420 [W210]...

Sorry I could not offer a more positive response.

Thumbs up Many Thanks!

Thanks to all who have provided feedback. My brakes are great, I don't have too much junk in the trunk, it starts and runs great -- so I must be right where I should be. So much for the gas saving qualities of the 4 cylinder engine! I know, it was the emission-strangled 70s and the car is made the way M-Bs used to be made -- carved from a steel block. And fuel economy wasn't even a consideration when I bought it. But I must say, as a daily driver getting 12 mpg and costing $60+ to fill up (premium is over $4 in Washington state) -- it's starting to sting. But man, these W114/115's are mighty sweet cars!

Well, pretty soon it will be Summer in Seattle and I can start riding my Vespa to work (50-60 mpg).

Thanks again!

My friend Sean just gave his nephew, who lives in Washington State a 1976 BMW2002. Sean said that unlike here in California, in Washington, smog checks are not required. So he removed all of the smog equipment from the car, which increased its power and mileage. Maybe you can try doing the same to your car.
